Making Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm

Pouring into the molds

My first batch of homemade lip balm.  A really easy recipe and just a couple of steps and you have your own natural lip balm.  Karl made me the stand that holds the tubes to help with the pouring of the liquid into them.  Worked pretty well...maybe some fine tuning for the next batch.  These were made with beeswax, olive oil and honey.  Melt them together and pour into your containers and voila...all done.  I was going to add an esential oil to them but I got so exicted about pouring the liquid into the tube, I totally forgot!  This time around they scent free but the beeswax and olive oil give them a great scent and feel all on their own!

Catching up
Enjoying a beautiful spring like day here...chatting with the neighbours and learning a little more about the lay of the land.  The land that we are living and working on was the family homestead of the man that is leaning on his truck who happens to be our neighbor a few doors down.  He loves dropping by to see what Karl is doing and share memories of his grandparents and what they used to do with the land.  We love having him come by because we get to learn more about the history of the land and area.  A win win situation for all!

New Hobby

I'm a hooker...rug hooker that is and I love it.  A group of us meet every Tuesday and is a great community event and a great way to meet new people and learn something new at the same time.  I really like it because you choose your own colours, design and you can create what you want.  There are no real rules to follow.  You can use wool, old material or experiment with silks or either fabrics.  It is great.  Here is a link to the history of the craft....

My latest read
This was recommended by a friend and I am glad that it was.  I think that everyone should read this book...we all need to be aware about where our food comes from...and I use the term food very loosely here.  Some of what is being done should really be illegal...anyone else have thoughts about this?  An eyeopener.

Occupy our Food

"We have alternatives that protect the Earth, protect our farmers, and protect our health and nutrition. To occupy the food system means simultaneously resisting corporate control and building sustainable and just alternatives, from the seed to the table. One seed at a time, one farm at a time, one meal at a time – we must break out of corporate food dictatorship and create a vibrant and robust food democracy." -Vandana Shiva

She was very recently in Nova Scotia...unfortunately we were not able to see her in person, but followed some of her interviews and presentations.

Time Flies...

It has been a while to post something new...WOW time really flies by.

BIN #2 getting ready for take off
So we had some pretty mild weather the past few weeks and we could not get our guy to pick up his bin with our metal in it because he could not make it up our driveway as it was so soft from defrosting.  We were fortunate enough that last weekend we had a few nights of -10 and a Monday morning of -7 that we called him up to take away Bin #2!  We were sooo happy to be rid of it...8 tonnes of metal later....yeah we could hardly believe that it was that much...and they were a bit surprised at the metal place also but happy to take it!

Maple Tree Tapping
We were inspired by our neighbor out in LaHave who tapped her Maple trees and was able to get 1L of syrup from her trees.  We decided to give our first tapping a try...the sap started to flow and then stopped because of the colder temperatures but this week promises to bring mild sunny weather so maybe we will have some photos of our own syrup!  Whatever turns out...I am loving the experience.

Making the crepes...ok I didn't cook them, I just posed for the photo

Eating the Crepes
A special thank you to my family in Grimsby, ON to introducing Karl to Pancake Tuesday last year on our stop while driving across Canada.  We continued the tradition in our home with Buckwheat crepes (that Karl makes and they are delicious!) and also got invited to a friends for Pancake dinner!  Yum Yum!

Happy March to came in like a lion here on the South Shore with about 10cm of snow...hopefully that means it will go out like a lamb!
